The Beverly Hillbillies: Getting Settled – Season 1, Episode 2 (1962)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The rough-hewn Clampetts are mistaken for servants as they try to adapt to their new environment. Main cast JD “Jed” Clampett Although he had received little formal education, Jed Clampett has a good deal of common sense. A good-natured man, he is the apparent head of the family. Jed’s wife (Elly May’s mother) died but is referred to in the episode “Duke Steals A Wife” as Rose Ellen. Jed is shown to be an expert marksman and is extremely loyal to his family and kinfolk. The huge oil pool in the swamp he owned was the beginning of his rags-to-riches journey to Beverly Hills. Although he longs for the old ways back in the hills, he makes the best of being in Beverly Hills. Whenever he has anything on his mind, he sits on the curbstone of his mansion and whittles until he comes up with the answer. Jed’s full first name is never given in the television series, though ‘Jedediah’ was used in the 1993 Beverly Hillbillies theatrical movie (coincidentally, on Ebsen’s subsequent series, Barnaby Jones, Barnaby’s nephew JR was also named Jedediah). In one episode Jed and Granny reminisce about seeing Buddy Ebsen and Vilma Ebsen—a joking reference to the Ebsens’ song and dance act. Jed appears in all 274 episodes. Granny (Daisy May Moses) Called “Granny” by all, relatives or not, shotgun-toting Daisy Moses, Jed’s mother-in-law, is a true daughter of Dixie. Paul Henning, the show’s creator/producer quickly disposed of the idea of Granny being

Awesome! I love The Beverley Hillbillies.

@ukulelemike You are funny ! Consider the lilies in the field. You would probably have said that Jesus was deluded if you were around at the time.
This is heaven, there is no other place, no hell either.
Thats what Jesus tried to tell people but 2000 years later people still do not listen.
What is wrong with the world that can not be put right by following Jesus word?
You are waiting for a better life and he said he came to give us LIFE in all its fullness,

@tegid699 You think this is Heaven, and you think I’M deluded? Just tell the nice nurse its time for your meds, and let the kind man in the white coat wheel you back to your room, now.

  4. tegid699

@ukulelemike will it have chocolate rivers and lemonade springs?
Will the animanls have rubber teeth?
    Will it rain?
Whats wrong with this world, you are in heaven now and you have no idea! you are deluded !

@spenderofthrones The reason why Flat & Scruggs is not on those DVD’s is the excessive royalites of copyright. Thank Bill Clinton and the Republicans back in the late 90s, including Newt Gingrich who was House Speaker they signed the DMCA into law.

Ahhh, they don’t make ’em like they used to! Such a welcome relief from all the crap that’s on “television” these days. The Hillbillies were so pure and innocent; what you see is what you get. Thanks, Nologorecords; for sharing this old-timer with us here; what a great idea. It really made me laugh when Elly-Mae got to tusselin’ with Miss Jane, and then Granny wanted to get in on the scuffle – ha, ha, ha; hee hee!! A great opportunity to escape from the world for a few minutes.

Excellent writing in these early eps — Henning really had a clear conception of the characters and a vision for where he wanted the stories to go. Canny casting as well — Buddy Epsen’s speech to Ellie Mae by way of exposition is a classic. My only Q — what is the language into which this is being translated? Martian? Dutch? Weird, nonsequitur proper nouns are seeded right through it.

@taypar11 I used Pearl and Jed’s conversation as the basis for a sermon about Heaven once, how we can’t imagine what it will be like, when we compare it to what we think is so great here. Good stuff

  12. taypar11

What made this show great was the first season that set the tone for the future of the show. The writing was nothing short of unreal. The best line ever in this series was when Mr. Brewster was told they were having possum innereds. When he declines, Jed said “Well, that’s ok. Possum innereds are just as good the second time around.” Also, when Aunt Pearl states to Jed all the “bad” things about living in the shack before they move to Beverly Hills. Jed says “Yeah, I’d be a damn fool.”

I bought a DVD, and there was no Flat & Scruggs on it either. :(

So sad that the music licensing issues can’t have the original music theme played on the public domain releases.

If I where Jehtro I would be yelling yea Haw Dancing with sharon Tate!!!!

  19. StaunchComic

Why can’t some of you people look at all the hard work Sharon Tate did and her many accomplishments and stop dewling on the last two hour of her life. Sharon did a lot more than she’s givin credit for. I like to think of a happy and successful Sharon. Not Sharon the victim. Stop giving these white trash people any attention and they will be forgotten! Sharon will live on long after anyone reading this will through her Movies, Modeling & tv work.

You will NEVER see shows of this sort on television or movies anymore.
Like you never see scenes where police are ridiculed or made fun of.
These days the rich are only to be worshiped and envied, and their
paid lackey-cops, who often allow them to get away with murder,
are only to be FEARED & respected.
Hollywood has been HIJACKED BY ELITES just as surely
as D.C. has been hijacked by criminal bankers & IT STINKS!

  23. davehutchinson67

I remember seeing this as a kid on reruns in the early 70s. Was funny then and still a funny bit now…She was one gorgeous woman…

  24. jsilence418

The scum bag susan atkins husband has a site dedicated to her, think of that! on it he tries to trash Sharon Tate with a quote about her drug use !

  25. clintonearlwalker

@rollypollyjoe We call it California, I hate grits, I’ve only ever seen store bought moonshine. (although I did taste “jungle juice” in jail one time). The main reason I’m interested in this episode is because of Sharon Tate. I remember the murders when I was a kid, and this case is still going on today. Tate’s sister is still scared to death of the “family”. All you hear about is Manson, he wasn’t even there. Tex Watson was the “monster”, and he’s fathered children in prison.

  26. rollypollyjoe

@clintonearlwalker I think you are correct; getting old and loosing my memory. I have to tell you that the reason like this show is because it reminds me of some of my relatives! They really called it Californi, ate grits, and drank moonshine where I came from.

  27. clintonearlwalker

@rollypollyjoe I remember cigarette ads when I was a kid, nearly every other ad was for cigarettes or beer. I used to watch Roy Clark on Hee Haw nearly every Saturday night. Him and Buck Owens were pickin and grinnin. I’ve seen every episode of all these old sitcoms many times. McHale’s Navy, My Favorite Martian, Father Knows Best, Leave it to Beaver, I Love Lucy, and the list goes on and on. I like watching the old clips sometimes now on YouTube.

  28. rollypollyjoe

@clintonearlwalker Ah but Petticoat Junction was a spinoff of the Beverley Hillbillies.Anyway they mention that they were eating possum sausages. My favorite episode was when Roy Clark came by. Don’t hear much about him. He must be very old by now. Check out the Beverley Hillbies Winston ads. Amazing today.

  29. clintonearlwalker

@rollypollyjoe I think you might have made an error. Fred and Doris Ziffel were Oliver Douglas’ neighbors on “Green Acres”. Petticoat Junction featured Kate as the proprietor of the Shady Rest Hotel. I think that Sam Drucker was either on, or mentioned in all 3 shows. I watched every episode of all these shows many times when I was a kid.

  30. RadelWitchHunter

R.I.P. Sharon. Burn in hell Manson.

  31. rollypollyjoe

@clintonearlwalker how about this – Fred and Doris were the owners of Arnold Ziffel of Petticoat Junction fame; could Arnold have had something to do with that pot of sausages they were chowing down on?

  32. clintonearlwalker

@rollypollyjoe Don’t really mean to butt in, but I believe Adair82 is correct. I remember this episode, I’ve seen it several times, (as all of them). The Drysdale’s were having a very dull party next door, the Clampets were having a move lively party at their place with spiked punch and attractive people, some in bathing suits. The people were coming from the next door party, seeing what was going on, shouting to their friends back at the Drysdale’s. Basically, the party’s over here.

  33. rollypollyjoe

@Adair82 Are you sure this is not some contemporary reference that people would have recognized at the time?

  34. rofflemows2

Ellie “may” go skinny dippin in the ce-ment pond =D

  35. clintonearlwalker

Susan Atkins died in prison last summer, Charles Manson was caught with a cell phone in his cell for a second time last week. That was an amazing period in American history I remember pretty well and it’s still going on to this day. Debra Tate keeps track of where the released “family” members are and still fears them. She said the calls Manson made on his cellphone were to locations where known family members reside.

  36. GeorgeVreelandHill

Great show and one of my favorites.

However, we can show you how to get to the top of Google with no out of pocket expenses (free traffic), no stupid ninja tricks, no silly mind control techniques, and this will be all white hat with no blackhat software or tactics that could possibly land you on bad terms with Google and put you in the dreaded “Google Sandbox”.
