Look up Swannanoa Gathering—that’s one I know of—held in the mountains of North Carolina near Asheville every year–there are others.

I’m glad you asked that question. As Americans we really need to learn our fascinating history. The mountain culture represented here did not have the same burden of racism that the lowlands and coasts of the South had. Why? Different agricultural practices and a relatively classless structure characterized by very little slavery and no self-styled aristocracy. In fact there were areas of the Southern mountains that fought for the Union during the Civil War.
