West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the U.S., and it’s also one of the whitest. “Strangely” enough, it also has one of, and often THE lowest crime rates in the country. Hmmm, but I thought crime wasn’t correlated with race, but with poverty. Man, this “race is a social construct” stuff is really hard! I just need to study harder, I’m sure.

WV should be its OWN country. It’s the laughing stalk of America. HA! HA! HA! Here in Columbus, Ohio, we have str8 roads, houses (unlike the WV trailer trash), talent, variety of music, Chipotle, Victoria’s Secret, Macy’s, real good ppl, less crime than WV, famous ppl, REAL fairs, better gov., bus runs every 10 min., and it only takes 40 sec. to go a mile. We got CLEAN water and a WAY better ECONOMY and LIFESTYLE. Stay in WV cause u may not live long in Ohio; we KNOW how to take the trash out!

Non-working, social security welfare, canabaliatc ppl EVERYWHERE. The only thigh WV has going for them is Marshall football. Atleast some ppl there ARE getting an education and being somebody. The stupid ones are let in the mine to kill eachother like the UBB incident. How stupid. That could have been avoided if the mine co was smart enough to NOT hire a bunch of dummies. LOL! Just stay in WV, breath in the fresh, black coal dust and die. Nevermind the real world.

It’s still bad, but not as bad as what it used to be. If a black person came through my county their lives were in danger. Now granted that isn’t as much the case now since there are a few black families that live here now. My grandfather told me he knew people who jerked black hobos off of trains, killed them and burned them in bonfires to cover the evidence. This was in the Great Depression mostly. The state has evolved somewhat and I think it will get better as time goes on.

I love that movie! And this was great! I’m from Texas and my “aunt’ Gladys would use the word nigger around us all the time because she grew up with it lol It still comes out now sometimes but usually she is trying to complement a black person and no one corrects her just to be polite lol

This is such a true testament, I am a black guy from Arizona and I grew up there in the late 70s early, and to this day stupid people still ask the same question. “Are there blacks in Arizona”. the mentality of people just amazes me… I don’t know if you familiar with a show called scrubs but, there is a funny statement they say in that show it goes like this, people are bastards, bastard coated bastards with bastard cream filling.

That’s disappointing. I would hope that they would answer instead “because the word has a long history of being used as a tool to degrade black people, make them seem like lesser beings, and the connotations are still there and still hurtful.” I don’t think using it to quote others, especially if you’re trying to paint an accurate portrait of a particular setting, qualifies as degrading, however. It happens.

This is really interesting. A character in the novel I’m working on was inspired by one of the boys in “The Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.” It’s very difficult to write at times. This helps give me some more insight into that world. I’m trying to elude stereotype and present his human side in the face of his racism, which often leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. Thanks for the honesty and sharing.
