Oh, I know…. (I am FBAV as well by the way)… I just tried to point out exactly what you are saying… Don’t forget Hank…. What I actually meant with that the Shadows could make it sound great without orchestra, is that I’ve got the Shadows at Abbey Road album, where this song appears without any orchestration… And that still sounds great… If you would cut that off this version, I’m sorry to say it, but Mark would be nowhere with this tiny insecure sound. Not that I can do it btw…

Amusing reading the crap of some yanks – the “best guitar player” has to be American. The best yank I have heard was Hendrix and he made his name, – and was most comfortable in – the UK. Kwambam – even entered into your mind the best may be in EUROPE RUSSIA or even ASIA ? Ive yet to hear anything original or constructive from any yank guitarist – just showy tripe.

The Shadows are the best in the field of instrumental guitar playing.
If you would really like to see Hank Marvins guitar playing abilities then look up on youtube Hank Marvin Gypsy Jazz & you will see. I have had the chance to see Hank Marvin play with his quartet at the Django Reindhardt festival at Samois in France & they were fanatastic.
Kind regards.

You get sick of all this bull shit! The world’s best guitar player is an unknown, playing in a band on the “B” circuit, in North Battlefield, Saskatchewan,; or Havre, Montana. I like Marvin and I like Knopfler — they’re both excellent and they both acknowledge that fact. Period.

What makes you think I am confused?
No confusion at all, except you didn’t understand the pun.
The word “electric” can also mean “exciting”. Like they says “electrifying”.
So I was saying that hearing Apache 1in 1960 (yes, I am that old) was “electric” or exciting as an electric guitar had not been played like that before.
I am too old to be confused as to the origins of the electric guitar and indeed early 30’s Hawaiian guitars were electrified. You can hear them on some Warner Bro cartoons.

Sorry to correct you the Electric Guitar was invented in the 1940’s. Les Paul for one was playing one around that time, Buddy Holly was playing one in the 50’s. Hank was the first to have a Strat in the UK, maybe that’s where the confusions lay.

You are totally wrong in this assumption Fender brought out the Esquire first electric solid body single pick up guitar in 1954 before the shadows where established.
Whilst the Shadows where our heroes in the UK the Ventures in the USA where a lot more creative. You don’t have to be a genius to play Apache but you do to play like Eric Clapton or Mark Knopfler.

I am pretty sure that I’ve got this right, Apache was recorded early 1960 and H.B.M would have been 18 and turned 19 in October that year.
It’s hard for us today to wrap our heads around this, but when Hank came out nobody had made an electric guitar, on both sides of the Atlantic, sound like that. He rally was the first of a kind. I was eight when I first heard Apache – it was… electric (pun intended).

How very interesting! It just shows how very difficult it is to emulate exactly what Hank B.M. brings to the guitar. It’s not all electronics nor even the guitar – though the sound helps of course. What a nice tune anyway, whoever plays it. Both Hank & Mark are gifted players but Hank was doing the business when still so young. In June 1960 (Apache laid down) Hank was 19 wasn’t he? How old was Mark when Dire Straits first formed? How fortunate 1st Strat in the UK went straight to Hank Marvin.

Keep playing Rock! Shadows is not your style. You play to flat and your drummer need to take some lessons too. You cannot beat Hank…It’s not possible. You do not get the sound, the feeling and interpretation . Forget it~

@alclark123 , comparing Knopfler with Marvin,is a little hard ,as they come different decades , technology wasn’t what as advanced in Marvins’ era as it was in Knopflers’ time..The raw music of the 60s, was for the most part , unenhanced, not so in the 80s ,90s…..They can ‘smoothen’ notes with a flick of a switch.. They are both supreme guitarists, albeit , from different eras….

Knopfler was inspired by Marvin, as were others like Beck and Gilmour.
Knopfler’s attempt is fair but lacks the depth and feel of Marvin. Nevertheless, it is identifiable as a Shads cover – like some others on the Tube.
