Bubble Puppy – A Gathering Of Promises (Full Stereo Album) (1969)

This album is available at: www.amazon.com Bubble Puppy is a Texan psychedelic rock band originally active from 1966 to 1969. They are best remembered for their Top-20 hit “Hot Smoke & Sasafrass”. Bubble Puppy scored a Top-20 US hit in 1969 with their single, “Hot Smoke & Sasafrass”. The name was a misheard line lifted from an episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies”. The single peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 100 and number 15 (RPM) in Canada. In addition, the song was at the top of many radio station playlists over the summer of 1969. The song was also covered internationally, by The Mooche in the UK. In 1969, Bubble Puppy released their first full-length album, A Gathering of Promises. However, despite Bubble Puppy’s early success with the “Hot Smoke & Sasafrass” single, they experienced numerous conflicts with International Artists, and parted ways with the label in 1970. 1. The guy in black is Messi with mustache.

  2. SupernalOne

check out Quicksilver Messenger Service, 1st album, if you like 60’s psychedelic guitar bands – especially the cuts Gold & Silver and The Fool, similarly creatively-inspired independent writing & playing

an original sounding band, yessir, I like ’em -
vocal harmonies, guitar harmonies, complex arrangements – these guys were real musicians, no garage-band types

Cover art is very interesting. It’s the same exact pose as Iron Butterfly on the gatefold of the Ball album! Only thing that’s missing in Bubble Puppy’s version is the guy with the goatee holding up a decorative plate.

My grandfather, Chris Hillman, was the bassplayer in The Byrds.

the look in those cats eyes is the only reason i dont hate most texans

By the way I meant to say The Byrds (not the Birds). Sorry for my bird-brained mistake….

I vaguely remember the hit song but I certainly like the album. I would’ve loved owning this album back in the day. As it is, it’s a rare gem.

Agreed, they had so many influences and who’s to say that they weren’t as influential as well? I also hear The Birds, The Who, Jefferson Airplane (SF sound, as you mentioned), The Monkeys, some Greatful Dead, and early Beatles harmonies. If nothing else youtube has made it possible for so many great bands to have a new day in the sun.

I wonder how musicians were influenced by the 1st song and this album, in the sixties. If someone could take a pole, I’ll bet it would surprise you. Flat out. I know I was. I am 62 years old and still playing thanks to early influences like this.

This band should have been invited to Woodstock. Too bad there is no footage of the banb. Amazing album.

    Todd’s a great guy!

Ah, so THIS is the infamous Bubble Puppy. Really interesting band; there’s elements of all kind of things happening here. Harmonies are very CSN, music is at times folk, at times straight-ahead SF-style psych-jam, but there’s also hints of the prog era to come. “Sassafras” for example, sounds a lot like something from the first Yes album, and there’ some Kansas-y sounds as well. One thing about all the Texas band, though—those guys could PLAY. All that picking didn’t go to waste, it seems.

I still can’t believe only a bit over 2,000 views! Todd, Rod, and Co. play the hell out of it on this Lp and its related singles. Stands up to even The Elevators, as far as best IA album of all. Very underappreciated is putting it lightly.

less than 1500 views??? WTF very under appreciated
