No, the intro was not changed. The early episodes of The Beverly Hillbillies are in the public domain, meaning that anyone can package them up and sell them. But the title song could not be used because it was copyrighted and to substitute that they used this generic banjo music instead.
This episode aired in early 1964 and got among the highest TV ratings
for the entire series, same thing happened for a number of other comedies
airing at this time, one theory for this happening is that many people were depressed and discouraged following the recent assassination of Kennedy
and were desperately looking for escapist entertainment.
